Chanting has not only been heard in hip hop for a long time. More and more post-punk acts are articulating themselves so clearly. A country like Great Britain offers plenty of material for snot and moth stories, and not just on a political level.
Billy Nomates, alias Tor Maries, names their resistance with just one word: "No". This is the name of the 2020 debut single by the musician, who grew up in Melton Mowbray (Leicestershire). She processes all her encounters and experiences in her minimalist punk songs. With her clear words and statements, you understand her point of view very quickly. Why do you have to shave your body hair? Why do you always have to fulfill the expectations of others? Just say: No! Billy Nomates is going her own way, and her lofi arrangements will resonate far beyond the island.
Her debut album is being released at a time when not only musicians and artists are suffering. in 2020, Covid-19 dominates the whole world. A virus is spreading, social contacts are no longer a matter of course. Hospitals and staff are overstretched. And then the UK is about to leave the EU.
This is of course the best fodder for new song lyrics. But Billy Nomates already had the material for their lyrical obsession before the pandemic. Things are already going well for the musician in 2019. More and more people are taking notice of her. The discovery credits preferably go to the wife of Sleaford Mods singer Jason Williamson. Claire Herron Williamson supports the singer, and so not only the Mods fans become aware of her, but also Geoff Barrow. Portishead veteran, Beak> drummer and label owner of Invada Records. The self-titled debut "Billy Nomates" will be released here on August 7, 2020, and Geoff also had a hand in the final sound. The single "No" is on the radio. Iggy Pop plays it on his show on BBC Radio 6 Music and it is also on various hit lists in Germany, including Radioeins.
Billy already wished for more attention when she was still playing the violin as a child. She was also a member of various bands, but was never satisfied. Depression caught up with the singer, and it was a concert by the Sleaford Mods that persuaded her to make music again. Billy would never have imagined that this creative revelation would lead to a collaboration with Sleaford Mods. Jason Williamson sings on their debut ("Supermarket Sweep"), Billy is a guest vocalist on the Mods single "Mork n Mindy" (released in October 2020), which can be heard on the 2021 album "Spare Ribs".
Her music combines a lofi punk rock sound, a bit of Peaches, a bit of Patti Smith, Captain Beefheart and Sonic Youth with her own voice, guitar, bass and synthesizer. Live drums and other basslines are provided by other musicians.
Billy Nomates commutes between Bournemouth and Bristol. This is where she writes her biting and angry lyrics. Always with a critical eye on the English class structure and gender inequality. A rebellion against sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Why are there still so few women on festival stages?
Her music is a place of defiance. She finds solace and a kind of liberation in her sound. She also actively complains and performs on social networks, and you get to know Tor Maries a little better there. However, Billy Nomates belongs on stage with her songs. There will be a little foretaste in September 2020. She will be supporting the Sleaford Mods live stream at the 100 Club in London. Welcome to the Bunch of Kunst family!
The second album "Cacti" will be released in January 2023. A new gem between moth-punk and catchy melodies. In Germany, you can also look forward to an impulsive and soulful live experience with Billy Nomates in spring.
