The music of London-born harmonica player, singer and composer Steve Baker is adept and stylistically versatile. His songs range from grooving Americana and blues to funk and acoustic rock. What they all have in common, however, is Baker's clearly audible pop sensibility, which gives his compositions their very own character, with few clichés and catchy choruses.
Steve Baker has long enjoyed an international reputation as an innovative and stylistically versatile pioneer on the harmonica. With his solo album "Perfect Getaway", released in 2018, and its successor "The Great Divide" (2020), he shed the role of backing musician for the first time and showed himself to be a convincing frontman who presents his exciting original compositions with a great deal of passion and skill. His third album "Too Much Is Never Enough", recorded with a new acoustic line-up, will be released in August 2023.
The combination of harmonica, guitar, double bass, percussion and three-part vocals is captivating, rhythmically sophisticated and intricate. Fullness of sound alternates with airy openness, and the sparingly arranged band sound is characterized by astonishing dynamics. The songs radiate with attitude and strike a deeply personal note that reflects our turbulent times. Baker's inimitable harp playing is by no means neglected.
As an accompanist and partner, he has worked with a wide variety of artists throughout his professional career. Tony Sheridan, Franz-Josef Degenhardt, Abi Wallenstein and Chris Jones have all appreciated his creativity and talent for song-serving accompaniment over many years of collaboration.
Baker has also worked as a studio musician on hundreds of recordings for a wide range of artists, including Stoppok, Achim Reichel, Hazmat Modine, Hannes Wader, Klaus Doldinger and even pop tunesmith Dieter Bohlen. He has also played on various soundtracks for TV and film, including NDR Tatort, Soul Kitchen by Fatih Akin and the Bollywood blockbuster "Sanju" by star director Rajkumar Hirani.
