James Smith’s biography reads almost like the beginning of a typical success story for a young singer-songwriter. Even as a child, the boy from London began singing and taught himself to play the guitar after receiving one as a birthday gift. It almost seems predestined that his first gigs took place in local pubs and clubs. By the age of 14, he was already gaining his first live performance experience, though due to his age, he still had to be accompanied by his parents, who supported their son’s talent from day one. An appearance on Britain’s Got Talent eventually took him all the way to the show’s finals at the age of 15, bringing him national recognition. But this is where the singer-songwriter’s success story takes a turn—at least for a short while…
After a record deal with Sony led to various performances but was terminated after just half a year, James Smith enrolled at ArtsEd in Chiswick and reevaluated his career path. In 2018, having barely turned 18, James Smith finally relaunched his career as a musician by signing with Virgin Records and releasing several singles. Following early successes and the “Little Love – EP,” he achieved major success in his debut year with “T-Shirts” and his breakout song “Tell Me That You Love Me.” His captivating sound—a blend of bedroom pop, rock, and modern singer-songwriter ballads turned “Tell Me That You Love Me” into an internet hit that has amassed over 150 million streams on Spotify to date and has become the flagship track of his music, which continues to evolve with his consistent output. In 2019, the young singer-songwriter released additional singles and compiled them on “An EP by James Smith”—just as he did in 2021 with the “District Line – EP,” which featured new songs. After releasing a few more standalone singles, however, James Smith turned his attention to a larger project and released his debut album, “Common People,” in 2024.
In 2025, James Smith began a new chapter with the release of the single “Dancing With You (Baby),” which culminated in the release of his second album, “Golden Age,” on May 22, following additional single releases. With influences from the country genre (“For You, My Love”), rousing desert rock guitars (“Rain On Me”), and pop-infused indie vibes (“Jesus Is A Woman”), James Smith delivers his most versatile work to date and proves that he has undoubtedly taken a liking to the album format. To celebrate the album in style, the English musician will embark on the Golden Age Europe Tour 2026 in December, where he’ll perform live at the Garagen in Cologne and the Maschinenhaus in Berlin.
