The musician and winner of the Listen To Berlin Award 2024, Sorvina, presents "Mississippi", an interdisciplinary concert and multimedia experience that will premiere at the Kesselhaus in Berlin on December 4, 2025. The production combines live music, film and ritual elements and focuses on Sorvina's personal and family roots in the US state of Mississippi as well as the cultural heritage of the Black South.
The show features singing, a choir, specially produced short films and a performance by the Berlin dance collective Movement Seven, which is known for its expressive movement language. Together, they form a narrative that links themes such as memory, migration and spirituality while also addressing key survival issues. Inspired by artists such as Noname, Tyler, The Creator and Little Simz, Sorvina's music is characterized by a fearless authenticity and cross-genre creativity. Musically, the spectrum ranges from hip-hop to gospel to soul.
With lyrics, images and musical elements from different genres, "Mississippi" approaches the topic of southern identity from a queer black perspective. The project sees itself as a concert and at the same time as a personal confrontation with history and the present.
